CamSight Peer Support Groups

CamSight runs monthly groups across Cambridgeshire for adults living with low vision and blindness, their carers, and family members.

 

The Bourn group covering Cambourne, Bourn, Papworth Everard and surrounding villages meets on the  3rd Wednesday of each month from 10.30-Noon at:

The next Bourn CamSight meeting dates are:

18th March, 15th April, 20th May and 17th June.

 

Members enjoy a range of different activities from guest speakers, entertainment, quizzes, and light refreshment. Members are kept updated on the newest equipment and support available from CamSight and other local and national organisations. The group provides a reassuring space for people to discuss their daily challenges and share ideas on how to manage them. By sharing tips on how to do things differently and helping one another, great friendships are formed.

Tuesday Coffee Club

Held at the Community Centre in Hall Close every Tuesday between 10.30am and midday (or when you’ve all had enough chatting!).

We were able to restart coffee mornings in August 2021 after the pandemic lockdown.

There are additional regulations in place to comply with social distancing and SCDC rules for use of their buildings, including being booked in for NHS Track and Trace and extra sanitising being done after each meeting. This also applies to any other organisations that use the Centre.

The Merribourn Club

The Merribourn Club meets every other Thursday afternoon at the Community Centre in Hall Close at 2.00pm. We generally alternate meetings with either Bingo or a speaker/entertainer.
Our ages range from late 50s to over 90 and we would love it if anyone would like to join us. We can always arrange transport to and from the hall where necessary. Do please give us a try.

Speedwatch

The Community Speedwatch in Bourn restarted in April 2019 following requests from residents.

Set up by the Parish Council it is primarily a volunteer organisation in conjunction with the Police.

The village, including some approach roads, has a 30mph speed limit, except within the central housing area where it is 20mph. This covers areas of higher pedestrian activity and includes Short Street, with the village shop and village hall, Church Street, Baldwins Close, Hall Close and Riddy Lane, with the school.

What is Speedwatch?

The aim of Speedwatch is to educate drivers to keep within the speed limit which can help protect cyclists, pedestrians, and themselves, and can reduce the severity of accidents.

Speedwatch monitors traffic speed at irregular intervals. This can be on any day, of any week, throughout the year during daylight hours. Vehicle speed is monitored with a visual display which also informs the driver of their speed. Volunteers collect the time, speed, registration number and identifying details of all vehicles exceeding the speed limit and a report is forwarded to the Police.

Initially a letter is sent advising them that they were speeding and to request that they respect the safety of villagers and keep to the speed limits. In cases where drivers are regularly ignoring advice or where repeat offences occur the information is collated by the Police and further enforcement and prosecution can follow. Vehicles being driven illegally are also likely to be noted by the Police and further action taken.

All Speedwatch locations within the village are agreed as suitable and safe by the Police.

Join Speedwatch – Get Involved

Every Speedwatch session requires a minimum of three trained volunteers to be present and, although we have fifteen currently signed up, it is not always possible to agree suitable times. The more volunteers we have, the more often we would be able to hold a session. Having said that, there is no minimum attendance requirement.

All volunteers must attend a training course given by Cambridgeshire Police which sets out the rules of operation and guidance. Our co-ordinator will be able to give you more information.

Bourn Twinning Association

Bourn has been twinned with Saint Papoul, in the Languedoc Roussillon region of France, since 2012, following the signing of our Twinning Charter in our respective villages. Our main aims are to encourage exchanges that promote an understanding of each other’s community.

Each year we organise fund raising events as well as attending the village fete and Christmas Fair.

Bourn to Run

Now in its 11th Year, Bourn to Run is a 10k and 3k event run by the community for the community to raise vital funds for Bourn Primary Academy and Bourn Sports Club. Generously supported by local business, the event is the biggest in the school’s fundraising calendar and more important than ever with budget squeezes.

The 2020 event has been cancelled due to coronavirus.
The organisers are hoping to run it again in 2021.

Bourn Scout Group

1st Bourn is a lively and dynamic scout group with over 70 boys and girls taking part in Beavers, Cubs and Scouts. Our young people take part in lots of exciting activities, including camping, hiking (day and night), firelighting, cooking, cycling, model building, swimming, punting, archery, rifle shooting, kung fu and geocaching.

Our groups meet weekly during term time with camps taking place at weekends or during school holidays. Beavers (age 6 to 8 years) meet on Tuesdays, Cubs (age 8 to 10 1/2 years) meet on Thursdays and Scouts (age 10 1/2 to 14 years) meet on Mondays.

1st Bourn Cubs 

We meet every Thursday evening to help our 8- to 11-year-olds develop skills for life. Every now and then that might mean using a compass, but more often than not it’s about giving them the confidence to have a go and get stuck in. Let us know if your child might be interested! We are also always looking for adult volunteers to help out – do get in touch if you are interested!

Bourn Players

Bourn Players was established in 1994 and the first of our 20 shows was performed the following spring.

Each year, we aim for our show to entertain but above all to be a real community event that also raises money for local charities. These shows are an opportunity for adults and children alike to tread the boards and display the tremendous talents that abound locally.

We are always extremely welcoming of new members, whether you wish to display your acting, singing and dancing talents or to get involved in the large number of backstage roles that our productions require.

Bourn Neighbourhood Watch

The aim of Bourn Neighbourhood Watch is to improve communication between both residents and the local police in order to mount the most effective and rapid response to local crime.

In order to be successful we need as much participation from local villagers as possible so that we can keep everyone informed about any incidents as quickly as possible and feedback any details of crime occurring.

The most efficient way of passing on this information is by email, so if you would like to join the Bourn Neighbourhood Watch mailing list please contact the committee at nhw.bourn@gmail.com.

If an incident needs immediate attention you should dial 999 or use the police non-emergency number, 101, as appropriate. Do not contact Neighbourhood Watch at that point. (But please inform us later so we can let other residents know!). If however what you see is non urgent and may provide information to help police with an investigation then please pass it on to the committee.

The police are very supportive of this initiative as it makes their job much easier and is proven to reduce crime. We do hope that you are able to support us to make our village safer for everyone!
