Calling all Bourn Car Drivers

Bourn Community Car Scheme is a small, voluntary group, backed by the Care Network and the Combined Authority, that drives Bourn residents without access to transport to medical appointments, e.g. GP, hospital, dental, optician etc.

We are experiencing an increasing need for our service, and more frequently during evenings and weekends, as the NHS tackles backlogs.
There is no fixed commitment – you just offer help when you are available – and there are just two simple steps to get set up.

  • First, apply for a DBS from the Combined Authority, which we will help you do.
  • Second, join our Whatsapp group.

Then, when a client requests a driver, our coordinator puts the details onto the Whatspp group.

If it is a date and time you can do, or want to do, you volunteer, simples! You are reimbursed 45p per mile.

The more of us there are, the more likely one of us will be free and be able to cover the request – we all have other commitments!

So please consider joining us – you’ll be helping our local, mostly elderly, community but without interfering with your own schedule.

It’s a simple act that means so much to them.

The community car scheme provides door-to-door transport for people who do not have the use of a car and are unable to use conventional public transport. Passengers pay for the journey, but the cost is also subsidised by Cambridgeshire County Council.

All the journeys are arranged through the scheme’s co-ordinators and the lifts are provided by volunteer drivers using their own cars. All volunteer drivers have enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) checks and are fully insured.

Who can use the service?

Any residents of Bourn who are unable to travel by any other means can use this service. All journeys are subject to the availability of drivers and at the discretion of the co-ordinator.

What type of journey can you make?

The scheme will include essential trips such as attending medical, dental and chiropody appointments and hospital visiting in extenuating circumstances.

How much does it cost and how do I pay?

Passengers pay the driver on the day of travel to contribute to fuel expenses. (The driver also gets a subsidy from the County Council to help cover costs). Mileage is calculated from the driver’s home and back at a rate of 45p per mile with a minimum charge of £4.50 on any journey.

How can I arrange a journey?

The scheme co-ordinator can be contacted on 07948 112531 between 10am and 4pm, Monday to Friday. If there is no answer then just leave a message and someone will get back to you.

Please give as much notice as possible – preferably at least 48 hours – so that the co-ordinator has time to find a volunteer driver who is free when needed.
